Growth Spurts and Blog News!

Baby growth spurts are difficult to go through, especially when breastfeeding, but so essential for their growth! Ian had his 6 week check up with our midwife yesterday and he is 13 lbs and 8 oz! Such a big boy.

So the signs of a growth spurt are the following:

1. Wants to eat non-stop.
2. Be up more often at night.
3. Be crankier than usual, such as fussy while nursing, latching and unlatching.

This is what Ian was doing about a week and a half ago, and I was close to getting formula and giving him some because I was feeding him every hour! But thankfully after 2 days of cluster feedings, he went back to his normal schedule of 2- 2.5 hours between feedings.
So if you are breastfeeding through a growth spurt, don't give up! Also, don't doubt your milk supply! I was nervous and worried that I wasn't going to keep up with him in my milk production, but after 2 days of cluster feedings, I had plenty of milk. God makes an amazing thing, breastfeeding. It is amazing how it works and how important and vital it is for your baby the first few weeks. Even if you only breastfeed one week, it helps your baby.
Here are helpful and encouraging tips for feeding through growth spurts:

1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Whatever you do, don't give up on breastfeeding now! It will pass and your milk will come in to keep up with your baby. When baby is suddenly cluster feeding and eating around the clock, that is what is helping your milk to make more and keep up with him.
3. If you're really concerned, keep an eye on two things- wet diapers and weight gain.

Beginning next week, I will be posting 2 times a week- Wednesdays and Fridays.
