How To Declutter Effectively

When I was pregnant with Ian- I was tired all of the time. I took almost two naps a day and I slept about 8-9 hours a night. So needless to say my house did not feel as loved and I stopped my decluttering mission. Until now. This past week I have been decluttering.

Do you have one of those closets( or more) that you have to close really hard to shut? Then when you come back later you forget how much clutter is in there and it all falls out? Yep, I have a few of those. So my mission this past week was my closet, my bathroom, top of my fridge and the hope chest in my kitchen/eating area.
Do you know how many bags I threw away? Almost 10! And most of it was junk! Ever lost a book and then bought another one and later found the missing one? Yep, I did.

Here are a few tips on How to Declutter Effectively:

1. Have Three Baskets( or bags)
To begin you need three baskets marked - keep, donate, throw away. This will help you begin to sort out each item you find in the cluttered cabinet, closet, drawer, etc.

2. Talk to Yourself
No, you are not crazy if you do. You need to ask the questions:  "Do I need this?" "When will I use it?" "When was the last time I used it?" "Does it have sentimental value?"
Once you go through these, it will help you figure out which basket to place it in.

3. Do 15 minutes- Then take a break
Too much at once will burn you out. I used to try to do it all in one day or in one morning and would get so burned out I would have a half decluttered closet/room. So then I began organizing clutter! Take 15 minutes to declutter then take a break. Go read a book, sit down, go online, take a walk. Anything to get your mind to unwind and relax. All at once will never be effective. Remember the BIGGER the project the MORE TIME it will take.

4. One Project at a time
Accomplish one project at a time, start with a simple small project and work your way up. It will be more effective and no burn-out!
